ASCAP attacks Free Culture, the Creative Commons, EFF

Via Wired’s Threat Level:

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is urging the membership to donate money to battle the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Public Knowledge and even Creative Commons.

I always wondered where ASCAP fell in the culture wars. Now I know.

The ASCAP, which also distributes royalties, said those groups are “influencing Congress against the interests of music creators. If their views are allowed to gain strength, music creators will find it harder and harder to make a living as traditional media shifts to online and wireless services. We all know what will happen next: the music will dry up, and the ultimate loser will be the music consumer.”

Bullshit. Music won’t dry up because it’s freely released. Old methods of making money with music will. New methods will arise. ASCAP can pull their heads out of their asses and start figuring out how to make this happen or they can go extinct like the culture dinosaur they seem to be.

Bible Stories

David Dewese gave me a copy of the Foxymorons new album, Bible Stories. It’s so unbelievably beautiful it makes me rethink everything I’m doing. Seriously, seriously good.

Touchdown Jesus Burns

In other news Touchdown Jesus — the 62-foot-tall statue of Jesus Christ outside Cincinnati, Ohio — was struck by lightning Monday night and burned to the ground. If you’re like me, you think, “How did a statue burn to the ground?” Good question.

It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remains.

You might remember Touchdown Jesus as the cover star of The Carter Administration’s God and Country.
