Clouds in California audio

I wrote this song on Monday. The title came from a song I was working on several months ago but that I just threw out. I liked the idea though so I just started playing around with it.

Somehow I talked my friend Siobhan into letting me record it on her new MacBookPro in GarageBand. GarageBand is neat. But it’s a little frustrating. The mixes below are pretty different. I played it once through singing on the same track. I think that performance was better than the many layered thing it became. The first mix below is mostly from that first take. The second mix below is me trying to clean it up with more rhythm tracks and a couple of separate vocal tracks.

Having just tried to listen through both, I recommend #2. But please, let me know what you think.

My friend Kimmy (who made me this awesome wallet) has just made an incredible guitar case out of coffee bean bags.

open mic report

So I played the Westside Bar last night at a largely quiet open mic. I played:

“Leaving You Isn’t Easy”
“Let’s Stay Together for the Dog”
“Driver 8″

Yeh, that “Driver 8.” I played the riff early in the evening when I was tuning and the host recognized it. He made a comment about the great songs on “The IRS Years.” Obviously, I differ from the majority of their audience on this point, but for me the only R.E.M. is that of the “IRS years.”

I actually pulled off the song all right except for a couple of lyrical flubs. I don’t think I sang it too badly which is nice since Stipe has a range far beyond my own. Anyway, now that it’s out of the bag, I may play it more often.

Open mic at the light gallery

This open mic didn’t actually happen. But they sure had a nice flyer. I sat around the Light Gallery for an hour and then decided to bail.
